Learning Outcome: Participants will be able to identify current standards of Nephrology and dialysis nursing practice and apply them to selected patient conditions.
Objectives:
- Describe the technique for preparing for the Nephrology Nursing Certification exam.
- Identify the Standards/Guidelines and Governing Bodies related to Nephrology and dialysis.
- Identify two major types of renal failure and their pathophysiology/etiology.
- Discuss the major risk factors for kidney disease.
- Describe the nursing care of patients undergoing hemodialysis in the acute care setting.
- Describe the management of bone metabolism as it relates to nursing practice.
- Describe the nursing management of anemia in chronic kidney disease.
- Describe the psychological stages of adjustment to CKD.
- Describe the principles of dialysis.
- Identify the different types of dialyzers and nursing implications.
- Describe water homeostasis as it relates to dialysis and nursing implications.
- Describe common blood borne pathogens and the nursing management of these pathogens.
- Identify the different hemodialysis vascular accesses and describe the pros/cons of each.
- Discuss the appropriate nursing assessment of the dialysis patient.
- Describe the nursing role in preparation and monitoring of the dialysis machine.
- Discuss the nutritional needs as well as the dietary restrictions associated with kidney disease.
- Describe the process involved in a kidney transplant, advantages/disadvantages, rejection and the nurse’s role.
- Describe the principle of peritoneal dialysis and the nursing implications.
