Thank you for your interest in serving as a mentor to a 2023 NextGen Fellow!
Please read through ALL of the information below to help inform your application. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through March 31, 2023 and notified by April 15. In 2023, we will select 20 mentors to work with our fellows. The Fellowship runs from May-August.
Our fellows will be split in two cohorts of 10 each:
Cohort A: Diabetes Research and Technology:
Apply to this cohort if you are interested in the cutting-edge of diabetes research and technology. This cohort will feature speakers and mentors working in the forefront of medical and technology research. Fellows do not need to have extensive or technical knowledge of biology, but should be interested in research and technology. Possible academic majors include biology, chemistry, biotech, engineering, psychology, research methods, or any major with an emphasis on practical and applied research. Fellows in this cohort must be available to attend the ADA Scientific Sessions conference from June 22-26, 2023 in San Diego, California.
Cohort B: Clinical Care, Education, and Patient Advocacy:
Apply to this cohort if you are passionate about patient care, education or advocacy. This cohort will feature speakers and mentors who are on the front lines of caring for diabetes patients like CDCES’, endocrinologists and social workers as well as leaders in patient advocacy and public health. You will meet with leaders who are working to advance and expand the ways in which diabetes is treated in patients, our communities, and legislation. Fellows hoping to pursue a degree in medicine, nursing, community health, social work, psychology, nutrition/dietetics, or public health will thrive in this cohort. Fellows in this cohort must be available to attend the ADCES Conference from August 3-7, 2023 in Houston, Texas.
Mentorship Components & Key Dates
Professional Mentorship & Networking
The mentorship portion of the Fellowship will begin in May and run through August, and requires the following commitments for the best outcome for both the mentor/mentee:
- Attendance at Mentorship Training and Orientation on May 3, 2023 at 7:30pm eastern.
- Meeting with mentees (45-60 min) a minimum of 3 times from May-August.
- Be available for ongoing support, career goal questions, and networking/connections.
- Complete an evaluation form at the end of the mentorship in August 2023.
Mentors will be matched with fellows based on the fellows' expressed interests. Therefore, not everyone who applies to be a mentor will be a perfect match with a fellow, and may not be selected. We appreciate you volunteering to step forward, and partnering with us to ensure the best mentor-mentee matches possible. Preference may be given to mentors who indicate that they will be attending the same in-person conference as their mentee.
