State Legislators: Pledge now to support action to advance racial equity and justice in Maine

Pledge to help dismantle racism’s effects on public health, delivery of healthcare and human services, family stability, education from birth through college, workers’ rights, economic development, public safety, and housing.

131st legislature

I, as a member of the state legislature, pledge to

  1. Support and advocate for state policies that improve health and economic outcomes in communities of color, and support local, state, and federal initiatives that advance social and racial justice.

  2. Support data-driven education efforts to understand, address, and dismantle racism’s effects on public health, including the delivery of healthcare and human services, family stability, education from birth through college, economic development, public safety, and housing.

  3. Support and advocate for state policies that improve health and economic outcomes in communities of color, and support local, state, and federal initiatives that advance social and racial justice.

  4. Recognize that the most equitable solutions to structural racism will come from the communities most impacted. Therefore, I pledge to partner with Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and other Mainers of color when seeking solutions to structural racism. This includes recognizing the leadership and experience of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, other Mainers of color who hold elected office and other positions of leadership throughout the state.

  5. Acknowledge that structural racism has limited the ability of impacted communities to shape institutions and infrastructure that center White Mainers. Therefore, I pledge to support direct State investment in the self-determination of these communities.

  6. Collaborate to dismantle structural racism within government by identifying and/or supporting specific anti-racist activities, practices, and policies that shape how these institutions operate.

  7. Support and advocate for the allocation of financial and human resources to accomplish these actions.

  8. Agree that racism is a public health crisis affecting our entire society
