Do you love to express yourself through acting, writing, storytelling, and more?  Do you want to make new friends while exploring topics that are important to you?  

In this beginning drama class for grades 4-6, students will be exposed to the basics of acting, including improvisation (making things up on the spot), pantomime, and acting with a script. They will also find the power of their own creative voice through writing and the basic elements of stage design. We will create our own characters and perform original or scripted scenes from age-appropriate, relevant material. This class will culminate in a short showcase of skills!

Character Design and Worldbuilding for Animation

In this 10-week course, ArtCenter Entertainment Design alumna Victoria Imo (she/her) will introduce students to the fundamentals of designing dynamic characters and worlds as part of a larger original story in which students will present together in class. Students will learn an aspect of designing for television and film animation while also focusing on their presentation skills when pitching an engaging story for an audience.

Documentary Photography

Class Description

Students will explore the power of storytelling through documentary photography while researching and taking photographs for a group exhibition in collaboration with Venice Arts in connection with the Getty. All levels welcome! Individualized instruction will help beginners get comfortable with a camera, and all students will learn to expand their vision and develop their own photographic style.

Exploring the Elements of Art

In this class, students will explore the fundamental elements of texture, shape, color, line, and more. Students will focus on one art element each week and will conclude the term with a project that incorporates each element in a distinct and cohesive way. This is a great class for any student who is interested in learning what art elements are required to discover their own unique style and preferred mode of creating.

Fundamentals of Acting

In this class, students will get a firsthand lesson on the fundamentals of acting — not isolated to one art form but interdisciplinary in the process of bringing this art form to life. Students will learn acting, writing, directing, producing etc. These lessons will teach students how to become an artist in all its forms relative to acting and creating their own projects. We will also discuss entering the industry and the importance of branding in the 21st century. This class will be unique because we will use the practicals of theater to teach students how to progress in film and television. Any knowledge of acting is just enough to become successful in this class. Come as you are!

Graphic Design: Album Cover Design

Class Description

Design multimedia album covers for different musical genres! In this graphic design workshop, students will explore visual communication design and typography, develop an understanding of the relationship of contemporary to historic album cover designs, examine the relationship of visuals to music, have discussions with professionals who are an integral part of the graphic design process, and more! Students will experiment with handmade and digital techniques. This class is appropriate for first-time and returning students.

This class will explore party dances, popping, locking, and house through choreography, freestyle, and battling. While learning vocabulary, musicality, rhythm, and more, students will develop their artistic voice within the dance form.

Kinetic Art and Coding

This class will explore wood, motors, tools, and beginner-friendly coding to create moving sculptures. We will learn how to work with wood, including an introduction to our wood shop tools. We will also gain a working understanding of computer coding to make our sculptures interactive. No prior experience is necessary.

Music Production (MS)

Class Description

Students in grades 6-8 will have an immersive experience aimed at developing their skills in beat making. In this class, students will explore the fundamentals of beat production, writing content for music, and subsequently record that music, all with a goal of empowerment for the youth themselves to choose the direction of their work. 

The highly individualized curriculum will be tailored to all experience levels and musical interests. The central goal of this class is to emphasize fun, teamwork, learning, and, most of all, using music as a tool of creative expression. By the end of the class, students will demonstrate skills in …

Music Production and Entrepreneurship

Class Description

This class will immerse students in the music creation process, covering topics including beat-making using Digital Audio Workstation, recording, and basic vocal performance. Additionally, the course will cover the principles of entrepreneurship within the music industry, 

During weeks 6-9, we will begin the production and post-production of a final project as an EP or individual singles for students to present in the 10th and final week.

Students will…

1)   Create original music using DAWs and recording software 
2)   Learn the fundamentals of the music business
3)   Learn about the many jobs that make up the industry
4)   Learn to protect art through copyright, building a catalog/legacy, etc. 
5)   Create song/s for the final project to be showcased in the last week of the term

Painting with Nature's Pigments

Combine your love for our planet and your love for art in this course! Students will use pigmented fruits, veggies, and bits of earth (such as raspberries, blueberries, carrots, soil, grass, and more) to create work that is self-expressive and sustainable. Students will learn how to make and preserve their natural and non-toxic paints for future use, get tips on how to repurpose and reuse food scraps to make art, and discover how to incorporate an environmentally conscious mindset into their art practice.

Storytelling for Film and TV

CLASSES MEET IN-PERSON AND VIRTUALLY ON SATURDAYS FROM 1:30-3:30PM PST
CLASSES ADDITIONALLY MEET VIRTUALLY ON SOME TUESDAYS FROM 4:30-5:45PM PST (2/28, 3/21, 4/18, 4/25)

At the beginning of every movie or TV show — before the actors are cast and the crew assembled — a writer sits in front of a blank page, dreaming up the story. Join us as we explore the screenwriter’s foundational contribution to the filmmaking process. Students will read screenplays, meet industry professionals and engage in weekly writing exercises designed to teach the structural principles of writing for a visual medium. The class will culminate with each student writing and table-reading their own short screenplays.
