Digital Photography Goes Old-School! (6-8)

Explore old school methods of photo printing using Cyanotype.  Cyanotype is a traditional form of photography that uses low-tech materials to emulate the process of dark-room photography.

Graphic Design: Fundamentals (9-12)

Learn Adobe Fresco as you experiment with the elements of art and design--line, shape, space, color, and texture--to design pieces of personal expression. And work with photographs to support your graphic design skills. These formal and informal concepts of form and space set the stage for critical visual thinking and communication. In this class for middle schoolers, students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay while exploring different hand-building and glazing techniques. Students will learn all about the history and culture of zines. We will create zines traditionally and digitally using iPads. Students will draft, draw, edit, and print their own zines and produce multiple copies of them. We will celebrate by having a zine trading at the end of the class!

Mixed Media: Visual Journaling (9-12)

Class Description

In this class, students will explore their creative process and self-expression through visual journals. Students will use various mixed media techniques throughout the class such as painting, drawing, collage, and more. These diverse mediums offer limitless possibilities for experimentation.

This immersive class combines the expressive power of mixed media art while incorporating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) prompts.

Sawdust Serenades: Introduction to Woodworking! (6-8)

In this introduction to woodworking class, students will learn fundamental woodshop skills through hands-on experience with tools, including sanders, saws, and drill presses. Students will learn shop and tool safety during the first week before designing and fabricating a personalized wooden amplifier. In the second week, students will use their newfound woodworking skills to create a unique hand-held instrument.

Instant Acting! Comedy Improv for Everyone (9-12)

Improvisation is the art of making things up in front of an audience. That might seem scary, but don't we make things up all the time in real life? Comedy improv has some hidden rules that are also useful life hacks/skills for school and personal relationships. In this class you will overcome shyness, be playful, make new friends, and build confidence for any situation! If you are interested in acting, improvisation is a must-have skill.

Future Filmmakers: Festival Curator Workshop

TUESDAYS/THURDAYS ONLY. This workshop is an exciting behind-the-scenes look at how a film festival runs. You will receive training from film programmers and curators, screen short film submissions created by other high schoolers, and help curate a showcase program. Learn to critique a film, what programmers do, and how a film festival works! You'll take a field trip July 19 to the Film Independent offices and be invited to participate in the Future Filmmakers Showcase in August.
