Stanfield Law Scholarship Application - Academic Year 2023-2024

Complete the form below to apply for the Stanford Law Scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year. 

The application consists of three sections: a five-page (max) narrative, experience description, and letters of recommendation. You may be asked to submit additional information at a later date. 

The deadline for completed applications is June 1, 2023. Late submissions may not be accepted. 

About the Otto M. Stanfield Law Scholarship
The Otto M. Stanfield Law Scholarship is available to Unitarian Universalist students entering or attending law school at the graduate level. Pre-law and/ or political science majors are not eligibleScholarships are awarded for one year; however, students may reapply each year if they wish to continue receiving financial assistance. 

Scholarship recipients will be notified by mid-July 2023 for the 2023-2024 academic year beginning in August/ September 2023. The amount and number of scholarships awarded may vary each year.

EDUCATION
Applicants must submit an official transcript from each college attended. Applicants who have attended less than two years of college must also submit an official high school transcript. Complete a section for each institution you have attended since high school.

ESSAY
Mrs. Stanfield asked the committee to consider "not only the intellectual attainments and potentialities of the beneficiaries but whether in character and constructive spiritual philosophy the beneficiaries are most likely to use their legal training for the betterment of humankind." In an essay not exceeding five typed pages describe how your goals are consistent with Mrs. Stanfield's wishes.

Please be sure to address the following questions in your essay: 
  • What does social justice mean to you? How do you describe your relationship between justice and your spirituality/ faith?
  • What motivated you to go to law school and what do you hope to do after you graduate?
  • How does your identity impact how you see yourself as a social justice lawyer?

RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommendation letters should make reference to the qualities described in the essay question. 

  • This letter should establish and comment on your Unitarian Universalist affiliation. It should come from your minister or an officer of a church. 

  • This letter should come from a teacher or instructor who is qualified to evaluate your educational experience. You should obtain a recommendation from an instructor who is familiar with your legal qualifications. If you have been out of school for a considerable amount of time, you may obtain a professional recommendation.
