The Community Led Research Pilot, based in Reading and Slough, puts communities at the heart of the research process – inviting them to develop and deliver their own research project – supported by a researcher. The pilot is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and created by the British Science Association, the University of Reading, community partners in Reading and Slough, and communities that are new to or traditionally underrepresented in research. Five grants of up to £9,200 are available to support community groups with researchers on designing local research around themes, ideas, issues, and questions that are important to their communities. Grant-funded projects will run from October 2023 to October 2024. Please review the grant guidelines before completing this application form: https://www.britishscienceassociation.org/community-led-research-pilot-grant-guidelines We understand that this type of community led research may be a new experience or different from your usual work. Please contact the British Science Association team if you have any questions, or require support regarding the application process: communities@britishscienceassociation.org. Don’t forget to submit before 17:00 on Monday 18 September 2023. Good luck with your application!

  • What new information or knowledge will your research project create?
  • What would you like to do with the findings from your project? for example what impact do you hope the research might have?
Evaluation and support - sharing the learning during the project
We will provide support and networking between the groups running six 'Community of Practice' meetings during the project to:
  • Share insights between community groups and researchers, from five Reading and Slough projects.
  • Provide group training opportunities and support.
  • Evaluate the impact of projects such as through interviews with an external evaluator.
  • Share project stories, for example using photos, videos, written reflections.
  • Community groups to provide project updates to share progress.
The data from this evaluation will be used to measure the impact of this programme in reports and stories shared on the BSA website, with our partners and our funder UKRI.
Grant selection process and how decisions will be made
Please see the guidance document regarding how the grants selection will be made, working with our grant panel, including community representatives.
Your budget
Using the table below, please provide an outline of budget costs for your Community Led Research Project and a small description of how the grant funding will be used.
Please note the following when creating your budget:
  • Your budget cannot exceed the total grant amount of £9,200.
  • Headline budget: we are not looking for a detailed budget at this stage only main budget headings. We are mainly interested in knowing the types of costs for your project.
  • There will be time and support to help you revise your budget (if you are successful) once you are matched with a researcher.
  • You do not need to include exact researcher costs in your budget (if you are not already working with someone), but we suggest we anticipate each project may need to allocate up to 30% of the budget to researcher costs.
  • Evaluation will be coordinated by the BSA. You do not have to include evaluation costs within your proposed budget. However, please include staff time and if needed, travel expenses to attend the Community of Practice meetings. It is likely there will be four in person meetings (2 in Slough and 2 in Reading).
