Sports Backers is seeking mentors to support the inaugural cohort of the Active Living Leadership Program, ALL Stars for short. The ALL Stars program will provide education, hands-on experiences, and mentorship to a cohort of 20 Scholar-Athletes from the Richmond region. These Scholar-Athletes were nominated by school personnel, then selected to apply to the program, and finally a committee selected the final cohort. The full cohort of ALL Stars will meet for educational opportunities designed to explore what contributes to an active community, existing inequities, and how to make a difference in the community through active living. ALL Stars will be provided with opportunities to experience active living initiatives first-hand through participation and volunteerism with local active living organizations.

Throughout the program, ALL Stars will work together in small groups (crews) with the support of a mentor. There will be assigned reading materials, videos, and podcasts that each ALL Star will complete and then discuss within their crews. ALL Stars will work together, with the support of their mentor, to complete a capstone project that addresses an identified need in the active living community.

There will be a program graduation ceremony, where scholarships will be awarded, in May of 2024. Each ALL Star that meets the program expectations will earn a $2,500 scholarship. Additional scholarship awards will be available so there is opportunity to earn more than $2,500 in scholarships.

As a mentor, you will help local scholar-athletes earn a scholarship and contribute to their success as an active community leader. We will pair each mentor with a crew, which will be comprised of 4 or 5 scholar-athletes. Our hope is to have 2 mentors assigned to each crew. ALL Star mentors are expected to:

  • Attend the ALL Stars Mentor Orientation, which will be facilitated on Zoom on July 18, 2023 from 5:30p – 7:00p
  • Support up to 5 scholar-athletes throughout the duration of the program (July 2023 – May 2024).
  • Meet with their crew at least 4 times between July 2023 and May 2024. There will be assigned program content, such as articles, videos, and podcasts that ALL Stars must review, which will provide discussion content for the crew meetings. These meetings can be held virtually or in-person.
  • Expose scholar-athletes to active living organizations and the corporate, government, and non-profit organizations that contribute to an active, vibrant community.
  • Support your assigned crew in the completion of a capstone project. ALL Stars will be expected to utilize what they have learned to address an identified need in the active living community. The capstone project will be completed between February – April of 2024.
  • Attend the graduation ceremony, which will be held in May of 2024.
