Musical Mentors University Parent/Student Application 23/24

Welcome to Musical Mentors University (MMU)! MMU partners with Title I Schools to provide free, student-centered music instruction. University students serve as volunteer instructors to students who wouldn’t otherwise have access to private instruction. Our volunteer instructors have intensive music training - some are aspiring musicians or music educators while others are pursuing careers in finance, law, government, consulting, and non-profit. They’re all talented musicians who love sharing what they’ve learned.

Musical Mentors University is a semester long opportunity (Fall/Spring). Students range grades K-8. Most have no music training and attend public schools with little to no arts education budget. MMU offers lessons on most instruments and students can study any genre of music - classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop, and rock!

By participating in the program, students receive:

  • 8 private lessons with a University Chapter Volunteer Instructor (per semester) in person at the student’s school

  • Free instrument should they need one

  • Monthly workshops and masterclasses

  • Recital opportunities

  • Free/discounted tickets for live concerts and behind-the-scenes looks at venues in their communities

MMC prioritizes students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to take private lessons or engage in music enrichment opportunities. We start accepting volunteer instructor applications in early September and complete the matching process in early October. Lessons begin the second week of October. While we aim to match every applicant with a Musical Mentor we are limited by the number of volunteer instructors and the instruments they teach. If you have any questions please reach out to our University Chapter Coordinator (university@musical-mentors.org).

e.g., digital keyboard, upright piano, drum set, flute
We can help provide instruments to students who need them. However, we encourage parents to provide an instrument if they are able to do so. The vast majority of beginner instruments, including electronic keyboards and violins, are under $199.

We will get this process moving as soon as the student has been matched with a teacher.
If your student were to be accepted to Musical Mentors Collaborative, what days and times would generally work best for a 45-minute lesson at their school?
At UPrep, we offer programming primarily during school hours. If your student were to be accepted to Musical Mentors Collaborative, but can't be accommodated during school hours, would you be able for lessons in the afternoon at your school? If so please indicate the times you would be available for a 45-minute lesson below.
We will try our best to accommodate your student in the morning, but can't guarantee a spot for this term.

i.e. My student thinks that guitar is cool and he wants to play like Ed Sheeran. I am really excited for my student to have another adult who serves as a good role model

i.e. PE, Art, Science, Recess
