SUP Director Application 2024

About the position: SUP Directors will oversee the operation of one of 12 summer day camps. Camps will operate fully in person in 2024 unless public health guidance is prohibitive. Successful candidates will demonstrate creativity, willingness to innovate, interest in change management, and a child-centered approach to program development.

SUP Directors serve in a volunteer capacity from January 1, 2024 through May 31, 2024. During the spring, directors must attend weekly training on Fridays from 3-5PM beginning in early February, 2024. Directors receive $6,000-7,000 in internship funding plus subsidized housing to support the 12 weeks of SUP work (June-August 2024).

The priority deadline is November 1. Applications submitted after that date will be considered on a rolling basis. If this application is still visible then interviewing for positions are open. How the Leaders Director is different from other SUP programs:

The Leaders! Director coordinates teen employment for the 100 Junior Counselors that serve as co-teachers in our 10 summer camps. They are responsible for working directly at two of the sites, providing mentorship and professional coaching for a cohort of around 20 teens. They are also responsible for coordinating two weeks of professional leadership development programming for the teen staff (one week before and one week after camp). Finally, they work with central SUP administration to plan the annual Midsummer Celebration, a Junior Counselor co-led carnival that brings together our 800 SUP participants and their families.

Camp Director Essay: As a SUP director, you will be in charge of a particular camp but also be expected to cooperate and help with PBHA and SUP-wide efforts by working with directors from other camps. Do you have any experience working on a team? If so, please elaborate on this experience, your strengths and areas of growth, and the role in which you see yourself playing on the SUP team. How might you help to make sure SUP runs well while ensuring the excellence of your own program?

Leaders! Director Essay 1 Prompts (500 word minimum):

a) What characteristics, experiences, and abilities do you have which would help you be an effective Leaders! Director given the wide range of duties and extensive workload that come with the job? Please elaborate specifically on strengths and experience in youth development, leadership and professional skills training, event planning, and fundraising.

b) As a Leaders! Director, you will be required to support the professional and personal development of high school student junior counselors (JCs) at two different SUP Camps. You would work collaboratively with the SUP Directors at these two sites to support JCs to be effective teachers and role models and community leaders. Please describe any experience you have with motivating staff and how would you approach collaboration with the SUP Directors to support professional development and accountability in the workplace?

Leaders Director Essay 2 Prompts (500 word minimum): a) As a Leaders! Director, you will meet individually and in groups with Junior Counselors from two SUP Camps, attend staff meetings for two camps, and work with up to four other Leaders! Directors to coordinate training for 100 JCs and organize the largest SUP-wide event of the year serving 1500 participants and families across all 10 camps. You will be supported by two Directors of Programs (one for the site specific duties and one for the central Leaders! responsibilities). Do you have any experience working on a team? If so, please elaborate on this experience and the role in which you see yourself playing on the SUP team. What is your teamwork style like? Explain how you resolve conflict in a team setting. b) At times it can be difficult to balance being responsive to the developmental needs of individual Junior Counselors with the interests of SUP as a whole and managing Leaders! SUP-wide programming, such as training and big events. How might you help to make sure SUP-wide Leaders! programming runs well while thoughtfully providing individual support to all of your of Junior Counselors?
