2025 BANATAO FAMILY FILIPINO AMERICAN EDUCATION FUND

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 

The Banatao Family Filipino American Education Fund scholarship program was established in 2002 by Dado and Maria Banatao through the Asian Pacific Fund. The scholarship is designed to support California high school students of Filipino heritage who demonstrate excellence in math and science to pursue rewarding engineering and science careers where Filipino Americans are underrepresented. 
Award Information 
Recipients will receive an annual award of $5,000, renewable for up to 4 years for a total of $20,000. 
Eligibility Criteria 
  • Grade Level: Rising freshmen (first-years) enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year college or university for the 2025-2026 academic year 
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Major: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Environmental or Physical Science 
    Note: Those pursuing health careers are not eligible for this scholarship (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, etc.).
  • Ethnic Heritage: Filipino heritage (at least 50%) 
  • California Resident
Selection Criteria 
  • Academic achievement, especially in the sciences 
  • Well-informed educational and career goals in engineering/science 
  • Personal strengths, including maturity, motivation, and potential to succeed 
  • Honors 
  • Work experience 
  • Financial need 
Scholarship Application Process

Applicants must submit all materials online by Friday, March 21, 2025 at 11:59PM.  

From the applicant pool, about 15 to 20 finalists will be selected. Finalists must be available for a 30-minute interview via Zoom during April 2025. If selected for an interview, finalists must submit additional documents including official transcripts, SAT/ACT score reports, and a FAFSA Student Aid report. Finalists will be notified by May 9th whether they have been selected as scholarship recipients.  
Preparing Your Application 

Your application is comprised of the following materials. To be considered for review, all materials must be submitted by the deadline. 
  1. Online application form 
  2. Essays 
  3. Resume 
  4. Financial data for self and parents, as reported on your FAFSA 
    Estimates will be accepted, but data from your FAFSA Submission Summary (formerly Student Aid Report) will be required if selected to be a finalist
  5. Most recent transcripts, including grading scale
    Unofficial transcripts will be accepted but official transcripts will be required if selected to be a finalist 
  6. Two letters of recommendations, at least one of which is from a current teacher
    Letters should be on official school or organization letterhead. Please include the student’s first and last name.
