Summer Reads Host Site Application 2024

About Summer Reads 2024 and using this form
This application is for Summer Reads host sites for summer 2024.

This year, applying for Summer Reads with Literacy Minnesota is a two-step process. You will fill out this Host Site Application form in addition to a more detailed application with our new partner in 2024, Ampact.
  • AmeriCorps is not hosting the AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate Program in 2024. In response to this, Literacy Minnesota is partnering with Ampact to combine our longevity and experience managing an AmeriCorps summer program with Ampact's innovation and AmeriCorps State resources.
  • When you host Summer Reads Mentors with Literacy Minnesota, you will be joining Ampact's program.
  • The difference between having Summer Reads Mentors and regular Ampact members this summer is that Literacy Minnesota offers additional mentorship, guidance, resources, training and more to your members.

For detailed information on hosting Summer Reads, please visit our website.

Cost share
As part of your agency's commitment to host Summer Reads members, who receive additional training beyond that of typical Summer Impact Corps members with Ampact, the host agency contributes a cost-share financial match to allow our robust, development-focused programming model to continue.

For 2024, the cost-share rate is $500 per AmeriCorps member.

Mission and service activities

The mission of Summer Reads is to increase literacy access and success for children entering grades K-5, with the dual goal of facilitating members' professional development and community leadership skills.

At least 51% of Summer Reads Mentors' activities should be focused on literacy education for children entering grades K-5. Mentors may also work on additional activities as a secondary part of their assignment.

Summer Reads Mentors are NOT responsible for:

  1. Supervising other staff, interns or volunteers.
  2. Managing negative child behavior issues and/or discipline.
  3. Transporting students.
Appropriate literacy-related Summer Reads activities could include: one-on-one or small group tutoring, leading large group activities, leading literacy stations or enrichment activities, facilitating book club discussions, participating in field trips, creating home learning packets, or others.

Schedules
The Summer Reads Mentor service term is June 3 - August 24, 2024.

SUMMER READS MEMBER TRAINING
The first week of service will include required Summer Reads Member Orientation, entailing a virtual training on June 3, and a required in-person orientation June 4 - 5 in the Twin Cities. Host site orientations will be managed by host site supervisors.

As members of Literacy Minnesota's Summer Reads program, your AmeriCorps members will additionally have required in-service trainings on most Fridays throughout the summer (by webinar).
SERVICE SCHEDULES
All host sites must provide full-time (35 hours minimum) service opportunities during the service term for their Mentors - including orientation, training, lesson planning, reporting and programming/service activities.
