J-PAL Africa, in collaboration with the
Impact Evaluation Lab at ESRF, is hosting a five-day course on designing and implementing randomized evaluations to evaluate programs and policies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The course dates are from 4 - 9 July, 2024, with a day off on Sunday, 7 July.
This course is targeted at PhD students and researchers in economics (or a closely related field) based at universities in sub-Saharan Africa with an interest in using randomised evaluations to evaluate programs and policies. During the course, participants will learn how to conduct a needs assessment, review the benefits and methods of randomisation, calculate an appropriate sample size using power calculations, and identify ways to mitigate common threats and pitfalls to the validity of a randomised evaluation. They will also receive guidance
on putting together proposals for research funding and there will be time to work on a proposal during the course. After the course, participants will be paired with a mentor from the J-PAL research network to further support the development and submission of their grant proposal.
The course is free to attend. There is limited funding available to cover participant travel and accommodation costs. The application deadline is 3 May.
