Happening 80 takes place at Camp Mikell on October 18-20. Before you apply, please know that members of the Happening Team (except Celebration Team) are required to attend Team Training on Saturday, September 28. The training will be held from 10:00a-3:00p at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. You may also need to attend a few additional Team huddles on Zoom.

Observing Rector Application

Please skip this section if you are not applying for Observing Rector at Happening 80.

In order to apply for Observing Rector, Participant must:

Be a senior during the 2024-25 academic year;
Have served on at least one Happening Team (please note that Celebration Team does not count);
Be an active presence in Sunday worship at an Episcopal parish and a regular presence in their parish's EYC;
Be a confirmed Episcopalian (or in the process of being confirmed);
Be an example of Christian maturity to other students;
Apply for OR by May 24, 2024.

For your OR application to be considered, you must submit one (1) Personal Faith Statement from yourself and two (2) Letters of Recommendation* from your parish priest and parish youth leader. (If there is no youth leader in your parish, a letter from a formation volunteer, vestry member, or other church leader is acceptable.)

Your Personal Faith Statement should be 1-2 pages long (double-spaced) and reflect on what your faith looks like in everyday life. Include ways that your faith has impacted your behavior and any spiritual practices you use to nurture your faith on a regular basis. The time and energy you put into your Faith Statement will impact the discernment process for the Happening Steering Committee when selecting the next Rector.

Letters of Recommendation and Personal Faith Statement must be emailed to dioatlhappening@gmail.com by May 24.

*Letters of Recommendation should attest to your Christian maturity and consistent attendance and involvement with your home parish.

Serving as Rector is a major responsibility to be carried out with humility and total commitment to serving God and the Church. The Rector must be willing to adhere to the Community Covenant and accept the decisions of the Lay Directors and Steering Committee. Please enter into this commitment prayerfully and with the support of your family, priest, and youth leader.

A Rector/Observing Rector commits to:

Uphold the Community Covenant, specifically to represent Christ and our Diocesan Youth Community wherever they are;
Set an example of commitment for the entire Team. The Rector and OR should be the most committed to fulfilling all team duties;
Help plan the event and attend all team meetings, trainings, and the Happening Weekend in their entirety.

Episcopal Youth Community Covenant

Below is the code of conduct we expect all youth to abide in while participating in all Diocesan Youth Events.

EYCDIOATL Community Covenant

It is the policy of The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta (“Diocese”) that all events and activities conducted by the Diocese or on its property observe the following guidelines, which are to be interpreted in a manner consistent with the mission and doctrine of The Episcopal Church.

Responsible officials will model and promote behavior of and towards all Participants in keeping with the Baptismal Covenant found in the Book of Common Prayer.
Responsible officials will uphold all Safe Church policies (including Safeguarding God's Children and Safeguarding God's People) in all interactions with students at all times.
Bullying, fighting, abusive or offensive language, engaging in threats/coercion, or any other aggressive behavior is prohibited.
Any activity that presents a serious risk of personal injury or emotional harm to any Participant or other person is prohibited.
Sexual advances towards or unwanted, inappropriate, or offensive touching of Participants is prohibited.
Weapons or items that appear to be or create the impression of dangerous weapons are prohibited. Props for plays and games, kitchen utensils, utilitarian equipment and tools, and other items with a benign purpose that do not threaten Participants or create realistic and actual fear of harm are permitted if otherwise appropriate. (For example: a bow and arrow at an archery event or a cutting tool on a camping trip may be appropriate under all of the circumstances.)
When possible, all students shall be housed according to gender identity.

Camp Mikell does not currently have dedicated nonbinary dorms. Nonbinary students are invited to select housing on either Crow Hill or Chapel Hill.

All Adults and Students in leadership positions shall treat student disclosures with respect and are prohibited from sharing students’ private information with other students.
All Adults and Students in leadership positions shall report the following to the Missioner or Volunteer Staff immediately:

Disclosures of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse;
Disclosures of self-harm or thoughts of self-harm;
Disclosures of plans to harm others.

Tobacco products are not permitted and shall not be used.
Participants below the legal drinking age shall not use or have possession of alcoholic beverages. During Diocesan retreats and events, chaperones are prohibited from drinking. This has no application to proper participation in communion.
Illegal drugs and other controlled substances for which the person in possession has no prescription are prohibited.
Age-appropriate play or normal physical activities are permitted if they do not entail or threaten injury, offensive physical contact, or other offensive or improper conduct.
Discrimination on any basis prohibited by the Episcopal Church is not to be tolerated, consistent with other Diocesan policies.
Adults shall apply these rules using common sense and good judgment, and not in an arbitrary or unreasonable manner.

For purposes of this policy, the following terms have the stated meaning:

“Participants” means children or youth participating in Diocesan events.

“Responsible Officials” means persons who are acting for or in cooperation with the Diocese or have any responsibilities or authority in connection with an event.

Violations of the Community Covenant may result in being sent home from the event and will impact future leadership opportunities in EYCDIOATL.

Housing Policy

In conformity with the policies and doctrine of The Episcopal Church, the Office of Youth Ministries houses participants in accordance with their expressed gender identity.

Safe bathroom/shower facilities will be provided by gender (or specific times will be assigned to the use of a single facility). Participants will remain fully clothed while in common areas at all times and change in private areas.

By executing this registration, you acknowledge the existence of this policy and consent to its application at the event noted in the description of this form ("Event") for the duration of the period in which Participant is at Event.

Permission, Medical & Liability

As parent or guardian of Participant, I attest that they are in good health and have no physical, mental, or emotional reason that would prohibit them from participating in Event. I understand that every precaution has been taken to assure the good health and safety of all Participants.

I therefore waive any liability of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta ("The Diocese") or its representatives for any injury or death that occurs while attending the Event.

I grant The Diocese permission to hospitalize, secure treatment for, and/or order injection, anesthesia, or surgery for my child, and to have my child medically treated by a licensed physician, nurse, or hospital staff during the time period of the Event.

I also understand that The Diocese does not provide medical insurance for the cost of any required treatments and that all expenses would be the responsibility of the family of the Participant requiring treatment.

Photo Release

I hereby give my consent to all photos and/or video taken of my child by The Diocese. COVID-19 Risk

By signing below, I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assume the risk that my student, or others, may be exposed to or infected by COVID-19 while attending this event, and that such exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, disability, or death.

I understand that in order to attend this event, my student must be free from COVID-19 symptoms. Should symptoms develop while at the event, my student will be placed into quarantine and must be picked up or depart as soon as possible.

I further voluntarily agree that EYCDIOATL leadership may monitor my student for symptoms of COVID-19 (including but not limited to fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, shortness of breath, chills, dry cough, sore throat, and muscle aches).

I will immediately notify EYCDIOATL leadership if I become aware of any person with whom my student has had contact: exhibits any symptoms of COVID-19; is advised to self-isolate, quarantine, or has tested positive for COVID-19 prior to, during, or within two weeks after my participation in this event.
