Volunteer Group Interest Form

Thank you for your interest in MITA's group volunteer program! With over 220 sites along the entire coastline of Maine, MITA would not be able to care for the Trail without it's amazing community of volunteers. MITA would be thrilled to have your group become a part of it!


MITA asks that prospective volunteer groups please be aware of the following:

  • Volunteer trips are full-day events (usually 9am-4pm with some flexibility).
  • Ideal group size is 5 volunteers (some projects may be available for larger groups)
  • There are usually no bathroom accommodations on the islands with a few exceptions
  • MITA's 18' skiffs are open to the elements so cold bow spray should be expected while the boat is underway. Volunteers should dress appropriately, wear sturdy, closed-toed footwear that can get wet, be comfortable and capable of climbing in and out of the skiffs, and walking along uneven, often slippery shorelines.
  • Ticks, browntail moth caterpillars, and poison ivy can be encountered at Trail sites.
  • Volunteer groups can go out in rain, but MITA may cancel in the event of thunderstorms, high seas, heavy wind or thick fog. Staff will do their best to make any call-offs for weather the night before.

MITA greatly appreciates it when groups are flexible particularly around group size, region, driving distance, and project type. It's much easier to both find boats for and schedule flexible groups and increases the chance of getting a spot on the volunteer calendar!








Cancellation Considerations
 MITA relies heavily on volunteers for the majority of its annual Trail stewardship work and is incredibly fortunate to have a robust volunteer community eager to help out each season. Coordinating volunteers takes a significant amount of time and resources so MITA asks groups to be considerate of this as staff get in touch with date availability and to work out trip details.
