Cal Wellness "Be Well, Lead Well" Sabbatical Program Award Application

We will award up to eight $60,000 grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing health equity and wellness in their communities. The organization must use at least $45,000 of the award to pay for the nonprofit leader’s salary and expenses during the sabbatical period. The remaining funds (up to $15,000) are to go toward professional development for staff and interim leadership.

The Cal Wellness Sabbatical Program Award enables the candidate to spend between three and six months (maximum) away from the workplace. The grant term is a maximum of 18 months to allow the organization and the executive director/CEO to plan for the sabbatical.


A full-time employee counts as one FTE employee. Two part-time employees whose hours equal full-time should be listed as one FTE. Round to the nearest whole number. If there are no paid employees, enter zero.

For this section, the candidate should upload a narrative that answers the following questions. As you answer the following questions, please consider how your work aligns with our overall mission to protect and improve the health and wellness of the people of California.  

1. How does your organization address advancing health equity? If your organization’s work does not fit into our strategic priority areas, please explain how your organization increases access to other pathways to health and wellness.

2. How or why did you become engaged in your current field or work?

3. Reflect on your current stage in your leadership journey. How could a sabbatical contribute to your personal wellness and provide a meaningful respite?

4. Considering the changing US political climate, how has your work and/or your organization been impacted, and how do you anticipate a sabbatical might help you adapt or respond to these changes?

5. How would you use this sabbatical? 

6. Should you be awarded the sabbatical, how do you envision your responsibilities being handled in your absence?

7. Are you currently applying for any other sabbatical programs? If yes, please specify which ones and describe your status in their application processes.

8. What additional information or guidance do you need to better understand the sabbatical process and its benefits for you and your organization? For example, this might include interim management planning, advice on communicating with the Board, or understanding how to fully embrace the respite period.

                                          We collect demographic information to better understand who is leading the organizations Cal Wellness funds.

                                           

                                          Since our inception, we have been committed to funding organizations that strive to improve the health and wellness of traditionally underserved communities. Diversity, equity and inclusion is a core foundation value and an important component of our efforts to advance health equityWe believe that when organizations have leaders in decision-making roles who mirror the identities, values and interests of the communities they serve, there is greater likelihood of the organization more effectively contributing to improved health outcomes.

                                           

                                          We ourselves collect and report demographic data on Cal Wellness board and staff via GuideStar as part of our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and transparency.

                                           

                                          How will Cal Wellness use this information?

                                          This information is just one component of many that will determine whether or not you will be invited to submit a proposal. We are asking for this information in the letter of interest stage because we want to identify patterns related to what organizations are applying and which are getting funded. One of our core values is promoting equity in our grantmaking and internal operations.
