Endangered Instruments

Have you heard of SYO's Endangered Instruments Program? 

If you play a second instrument that is part of our Endangered Instrument Program (Viola, Double Bass, Bassoon, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba or Percussion), you are entitled to a free audition on this instrument if you are already auditioning for any SYO ensemble on your primary instrument.

Please note that all wind, brass and percussion players must be older than or turn 12 in 2026 to be considered for any SYO ensemble.

Please note that this should be an achievable first preference. One application per instrument is required. Audition panellists will automatically consider applicants for other ensembles if they are unsuccessful for their first preference.
SYO Strings and RGCO are only open to violin, viola, cello and double bass players in 2026.


Please note AMEB exams are a guiding tool only. SYO placements are decided based on audition results only.

Endangered Instrument Application - Tutor Details

Request for Late Audition


Musicians with extenuating circumstances that pevent them from submitting their audition by the due date may request a late submission date. If approved, musicians with a late submission date will be sent their excerpts 5 weeks prior to their new submission date.

If you know you will need a late audition let us know now. If you ask for more time after getting your excerpts because of plans or commitments you already knew about, SYO is unlikely to approve your request.

Reasonable circumstances may include HSC exams, ill health or other misadventure.

If you would like to be considered for a late audition submission date then please list your reason for requiring one below. 

Late auditions are not granted automatically and require approval.

Financial Assistance/Scholarships

SYO is committed to ensuring that all gifted instrumental students have access to our program. Applicants who are experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to apply for financial assistance. To learn more go to our website.
