Under the Bridge:
The Criminalization of Homelessness
following 5 PM Chapel on Wednesday, July 16th
Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery

The Way of Love in our backyard….

Safe Bay offers people who are homeless and living out of their vehicles a safe place to park overnight (6 PM – 8 AM), access to the Vineyard Church for restroom and shower facilities, wifi, a place to charge their electronics and to take shelter during storm events. Many of these folks are homeless for the first time. Many are working. Many are families, including children. ALL are just looking for a good night’s sleep. Right now it’s legal for anyone to park and sleep on any street in Duluth, as long as the vehicles is moved every 24 hours. This is already happening every night, and Stepping On Up supports these folks by offering a secure, staffed place to stay with access to a few basic services. In meetings with the city to obtain the permit, many fears and concerns were expressed by the neighbors that anticipated an increase in criminal behavior would accompany program participants.

Join us on after Chapel on July 16th to watch the movie Under the Bridge: The Criminalization of Homelessness. Working together with folks in our neighborhood, we hope to share concerns around public safety for everyone and grow in understanding of the challenges we face as a community in light of poverty and homelessness impacting our community. Please registerso I can prepare materials for the event. We will watch the movie together and share the challenges and concerns as we seek just and compassionate solutions for our neighbors living unhoused in Duluth.
