Buttenwieser Public Service Academy trainings are open to affiliates and community partners of Harvard University, the Phillips Brooks House Association and the Harvard Public Service Network. Are you a member, affiliate and/or community partner of one of these groups?

NOTE: If you are not sure if you qualify, please email sdc@pbha.org


  • Tutor Certificate is for afterschool tutoring volunteers.
  • Mentor Certificate is for 1-on-1 relationship match-based volunteers.
  • Teacher Certificate is for classroom-based volunteers.
  • ESL Training is recommended but not required for volunteers in Chinatown Citizenship, Chinatown ESL, and PEN ESL.
  • Working With the Elderly is for:
    • Elderly 1-2-1 volunteers who have not attended this training before AND have been in the program for fewer than four semesters
    • Pets as Therapy volunteers who have not attended this training before
    • Recommended but not required - Alzheimer's Buddies and HARTZ volunteers
Advocacy & Organizing

Attend all 4 and receive the Advocacy/Organizing Certificate! Come develop tangible skills and build a base of knowledge around advocacy and organizing. Each session is facilitated by someone who is well practiced in community organizing in the Boston/Cambridge area and beyond.

Public Service Academy tracks completion of training for programs and records certificates for resume and reference purposes. PSA commits to engage a diverse set of service volunteers in leadership development and skill-building.

(Only the 1st floor of the Phillips Brooks House building is wheelchair accessible. The SOCH is fully accessible. Any other locations will be communicated directly to registrants.)

Most trainings include a break for lunch/dinner (provided) and all have small snacks and treats. The following information is only used for that purpose.
