Volunteer with ECAD

Let’s find the right way for you to help change lives—with dogs!

Let’s find the right way for you to help change lives—with dogs!

We’re so excited you're here. Whether you’re a lifelong dog lover or just looking to make a difference, we want to match you with a volunteer opportunity that suits your life and lights you up.

We love knowing how new friends find their way to ECAD! Help us track what’s working—was it a friend, social media, or did a fluffy pup bring you here in a dream?

Why we ask: Some of our programs have age guidelines (especially for youth opportunities) and we love celebrating birthdays—dog cake not guaranteed, but not ruled out.

Thank you so much for your interest in helping our dogs become the Service Dogs they were meant to become!! 🐶 🐾

At this time, we don’t have on-campus volunteer opportunities for children under 12. But don’t worry—your love for dogs, helping the disabled community, and volunteering can still make a big difference!

In situations like this, we encourage parents/guardians to consider joining our Home for the Weekend, where families can welcome one of our Service Dogs in training into their homes for a couple of weekends a month. Learn More

👉 Ready to get become a Home Handler today? Woohoo!! Parent/guardian please enter their birthday above and complete the volunteer application as you. Once the application is reviewed and approved, your whole family can be part of the weekend experience—your child included—while you serve as the official volunteer on record. It’s a wonderful way to support our mission together, and younger dog lovers can still be part of the experience while their parents take the lead!

Still unsure? We get it, it's a big commitment. We encourage you to talk to you to visit ECAD's alternative volunteering opportunities to find the right fit for you and your family. Volunteer Opportunities

Step One: Sniff Test
Just like dogs get to know each other with a good sniff, we start by learning a little about you. These quick questions help us match your skills, schedule, and interests with the right volunteer role—so you and your future furry partner can start off on the right paw.

Why We Ask for a 6-Month Commitment

Training life-changing service dogs is a team effort—and every volunteer is a big part of that journey. We ask for a 6-month commitment because it takes time, love, and resources to get each new volunteer up and running. From orientation to hands-on training and staff support, we’re investing in you—so you can invest in our dogs with confidence.

Still unsure? No worries, it's a big commitment that should not be taken lightly. But we are here to help and happy to talk it through and help you find the right fit! Before you move forward give us a call (860) 489-6550.

Had a change of heart? If learning why we ask for 6 months has you thinking, “Okay, I’m in!”—go ahead and update your answer above. The dogs (and our team) will be tail-wagging thrilled!

Structure is key in raising future service dogs—we’ll support you every step of the way!

 Why We Ask...

ECAD’s dogs are in training every moment they’re awake, and consistency is key to their success. Following staff instructions and established canine care protocols ensures:

  • Consistent training – Every handler uses the same cues, rewards, and boundaries, which keeps the dogs from getting confused.

  • Best practices for well-being – Our protocols are designed to protect the dogs’ health, safety, and emotional stability.

  • Smooth teamwork – When volunteers and staff are on the same page, the dogs progress faster and more confidently toward becoming service dogs.

By agreeing to follow guidance closely, you help us create a stable, predictable environment—exactly what our future service dogs need to thrive. 🐾

For staying in the loop, logging progress, signing up for volunteer opportunities or joining virtual training.

 Why We Ask...

Much of ECAD’s volunteer communication, training updates, scheduling, and reporting happens online. Having a computer and internet access means you can:

  • Stay in the loop – Receive important updates, event reminders, and role instructions quickly.

  • Complete training and forms – Access online modules, progress reports, and program resources.

  • Communicate easily – Ask questions, share updates, and send in required reports without delays.

Being connected ensures you get the support you need and helps us work together smoothly—so the dogs benefit every single day. 🐾

 Why We Ask...

Many people volunteer with ECAD because they love dogs—and we love that about you. While we can’t always promise hands-on time, your efforts in other areas still make a huge impact on their training, comfort, and success. Every administrative task completed, event supported, or facility cleaned helps our trainers focus more on the dogs’ progress.

Think of it this way: even if you’re not holding the leash, you’re helping guide each dog toward becoming a life-transforming partner for someone in need. 🐾 Your work behind the scenes is part of the team effort that makes our mission possible.

 Why We Ask...

By giving ECAD permission to verify your driving record through the Department of Motor Vehicles, you help us:

  • Protect our dogs 🐾 – ensuring they travel with responsible, qualified drivers.

  • Keep volunteers and staff safe – reducing the risk of accidents.

  • Meet insurance requirements – our coverage depends on verified driver records.

This check is quick, confidential, and only used to confirm you meet the requirements for roles that involve driving.

Why Puppies Return to ECAD for Vaccines and/or required to be seen by ECAD approved Veterinarian offices
We ask all puppies to come back to ECAD for vaccinations so we can:

  • Save costs – We receive discounted rates from partner vets, and our trained staff can administer many vaccines in-house.

  • Keep records accurate – Using one system ensures complete, up-to-date medical records.

  • Avoid ownership issues – Some vet offices won’t release records or treat a dog that ECAD owns.

Centralizing care keeps our puppies healthy, our records consistent, and our resources focused where they matter most—training life-changing service dogs.

Why ECAD Puppies Can’t Be Left Alone for More Than 3 Hours
Our puppies are in a crucial stage of training and socialization. Long periods alone can lead to accidents, anxiety, or unwanted behaviors that are hard to undo. Keeping time alone under 3 hours helps them stay on track with house training, build confidence, and maintain the consistent routines they need to succeed as future service dogs.

Orientation is the first step in setting you up for success as an ECAD volunteer. In this session, you’ll:

  • Learn the ropes – Get familiar with ECAD’s mission, programs, and what your role will look like.

  • Meet the team – Connect with staff and other volunteers who will be supporting you.

  • Practice key skills – Receive hands-on guidance and answers to your questions.

  • Ensure consistency – Everyone starts with the same foundation, which keeps our dogs’ training and care reliable.

By attending orientation, you’ll feel more confident, better prepared, and fully supported from the start—so both you and our future Service Dogs can thrive. 🐾

 Why We Ask...

As part of being an Assistance Dogs International (ADI) accredited program, ECAD is required to keep detailed records for every Service Dog in Training. Weekly progress reports are a simple but essential way to:

  • Track development – They help us monitor each puppy’s growth, training milestones, and any challenges that need attention.

  • Ensure consistency – Reports give trainers and staff the full picture, so everyone is working from the same information.

  • Meet accreditation standards – ADI requires thorough documentation, and these reports keep us in compliance.

  • Support the dogs’ success – By sharing updates, you make sure each puppy gets exactly what they need to thrive in training and beyond.

Completing short weekly progress reports may feel small, but it’s a huge part of the teamwork that transforms puppies into life-changing Service Dogs. 🐾

Lifestyle Snapshot

Every puppy is unique, and so is every volunteer home. To set both you and the puppy up for success, we gather a “lifestyle snapshot” that helps us:

  • Match pups to homes wisely – Knowing your environment helps us give each puppy the right mix of quiet time, family life, and real-world experiences.

  • Support training needs – Different dogs need different levels of structure, activity, or social interaction. Understanding your home helps us match them to the right setting.
  • Plan for safety – Awareness of fencing, household pets, or young children ensures the dog’s well-being and your peace of mind.

  • Meet program standards – As an Assistance Dogs International (ADI) accredited program, we’re required to track the living conditions of all puppies in training.
By sharing this snapshot, you help us place puppies in the homes that will nurture their growth, provide the exposures they need, and build the foundation for their future as Service Dogs. 🐾

Let's Learn about Your Fur, or Scale, Babies.
Why We Ask About Pets at Home
Knowing about the animals in your home helps us make the best match between you and the ECAD dog you’re hosting. Some of our dogs may be recovering from medical procedures, working on specific training goals, or just need a calm environment—so understanding your current pet dynamic ensures everyone (furry and human) stays safe, happy, and set up for success.

Veterinarian Information
Why We Ask for Your Vet Information
On the rare occasion we need to contact your vet, having their information on file helps us ensure that all animals in your home are up to date on vaccines, preventatives, and overall health—especially when welcoming an ECAD dog into the environment.

Experiences That Shape You

Your Volunteer Story So Far
Your past volunteer experience helps us get to know you better and place you in a role where you’ll feel confident and fulfilled. Volunteers bring a wide range of backgrounds and talents. Learning about your history helps us celebrate and build on that diversity.

Your Superhuman Day Job (or Past Life)!
We’d love to know a little about your work experience—past or present. Whether you’re a spreadsheet wizard, retired teacher, part-time barista, or full-time superhero, every skill has a place at ECAD!

Who Knows You Best?

We ask for a couple of social references to learn more about how you work with others, communicate, and show up in group settings. We may reach out to them as part of our volunteer onboarding process—just a friendly way to ensure the best fit for you, our team, and the dogs we serve. No pressure, just people who know you well!

Keeping Everyone Safe—Humans and Dogs Alike

To ensure the safety of our dogs, volunteers, and the communities we serve, we ask for some basic background information—including your driving and vehicle details (if transporting dogs) and any relevant criminal history. This helps us match you with the right opportunities, follow best practices, and uphold the standards that make ECAD a safe and trusted environment for all.
Driving & Vehicle Information
If you're helping transport ECAD dogs or supplies, we need to confirm that you have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. This helps us ensure safety on the road—for you, our pups, and everyone involved.

Criminal History
To maintain a safe and supportive environment for our volunteers, staff, and program participants, we ask about criminal history as part of our standard screening process. Your honesty helps us uphold the trust of our ECAD community.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with ECAD. Because many of our roles involve working directly with dogs, clients, youth and the public, a background check is required to ensure safety and meet our accreditation and insurance standards. Without this permission, we unfortunately cannot place you in roles that involve direct interaction, but we’d be happy to discuss other opportunities that don’t require a check.

Still unsure? No worries, but before you can move forward give us a call (860) 489-6550. Let's chat about your concerns and see if there is a path forward.

Had a change of heart? Go ahead and update your answer above. The dogs (and our team) will be tail-wagging thrilled!
