CLASS INFORMATION

ENTRY GUIDELINES
Open to all musicians aged 12-19 (Years 7-12) and particularly suited to those studying elective music. Students should be confident in reading and understanding musical notation to get the most out of this course.

ANNUAL FEES
$385 per course for current SYO Members
$490 per course for all other musicians
+1.4% transaction fee

Course Selection & Musical Details

Orchestral Musicianship Essentials
This course is strongly recommended for all new students to the Symphonic Orchestral Program as well as any musicians who would like to brush up on their Orchestral Musicianship skills. Topics covered will include musical notation, chords and harmony, history of orchestral music, score reading and analysis, melodic and rhythmic dictation and sight-singing. Open to all musicians in the Symphonic Orchestral Program.

Orchestral Music 1600-1900
Orchestral music 1600-1900 will take musicians on a journey through music from the 17th, 18th and 19th century. Students will use a variety of means including score analysis, rhythmic and melodic dictation and sight-singing to delve into key works of the period. This course will cover the key paradigms of the period, engaging with the works of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, and the emergence of the symphonic form. 

This course is perfect preparation or extension for those intending to (or who are already) studying International Baccalaureate (IB) Music or HSC Music 2/Music Extension as Music 1600-1900 is the Mandatory Topic for Year 11 Music 2.

Orchestral Music 1900-Present
The Orchestral Music 1900-Present course traces and traverses the preeminent styles of the 20th and 21st century from Late Romanticism through to Serialism and Post-Modernism. Complimented by exercises in rhythmic and melodic dictation and sight-singing, students will learn to use their musicological foundations to analyse the works of composers such as Debussy, Messiaen and Schoenberg, and their influence on the Western art music aesthetic. 

This course is the perfect preparation or extension for those intending to (or who are already) studying International Baccalaureate (IB) Music or HSC Music 2/Music Extension as Music 1900-Now is essential knowledge for HSC Music 2.
*please note this class will only run if minimum enrolment numbers are met
