Letter from America’s Local Elected Officials to the American Public
As elected leaders, we are drawing the line: no to abuse of power, and yes to respecting our neighbors and American values.
As local elected leaders, we may not all share the same politics, but we are united in our respect for the Constitution and share a responsibility to govern with integrity. When we see Americans - citizen and non-citizen alike - being harmed, we speak out.
Across our country, communities are grappling with the real human consequences of federal immigration enforcement actions that have resulted in neighbors being killed, seriously harmed, and detained or jailed without due process. As elected officials sworn to uphold the Constitution and protect the people we serve, we believe this moment calls for moral clarity, public accountability, and a renewed commitment to human dignity and the rule of law.
We are calling on the President and Congress to act now: stop the use of lethal force during immigration enforcement, redirect funding from ICE, CBP, and DHS to programs that actually support communities, and restore accountability. We will not accept leadership that divides our neighbors or governs through fear.
When government actions erode public trust or place communities in harm’s way, silence is not an option. As leaders accountable to the people we serve, we must speak clearly and act decisively to uphold the values that make our communities safe, just, and free.
Our nation's values don't come from Washington. They come from communities — places where neighbors help each other, where respect comes from what people contribute, and where safety comes from connection, not fear.
Signed,
