Welcome Washington Educators for Grades 6-12
Pacific Education Institute (PEI) and the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are partnering to offer a training that invites teachers to explore the Yacolt Burn State Forest as a living classroom. Participants will learn directly from Tribal, public, and private forestry professionals who work in this landscape, gaining insight into the different approaches and shared responsibilities involved in stewarding working forests including forest management, fire, conservation and recreation management. In addition to gaining knowledge about local natural resource management, teachers will be introduced to curriculum to bring this learning back to their classrooms and schoolyards, including relevant activities from Project Learning Tree guides.
Located in Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, and Klickitat counties, the 90,000-acre Yacolt Burn State Forest and nearby areas to the east and north are working forests. Like many of the forests that DNR manages, the lands in Yacolt Burn State Forest are “trust lands,” managed to provide sustainable revenue in support of schools, state universities and local county public services.
This training is an exciting opportunity for teachers of grades 6-12 to experience the Yacolt Burn State Forest while building knowledge, skills, and confidence to take students outside to learn about the issues that impact their community.
- Washington Formal Educators that complete the workshop may receive:

This is a live Full Day In-Person workshop starting and ending at Battle Ground Events Center in Washington. During the workshop we will be driving through the Yacolt Burn State Forest on unpaved roads and visiting several field sites.
To reduce the number of vehicles and make travel between stops easier, we encourage participants to carpool, and we will help organize carpools at the start of the day. If you prefer not to drive on forest roads or do not have a suitable vehicle, you will be able to ride with another participant.
