Writing for the Web: Helping Website Visitors Engage with Your Work

May 7, 2026, 1:00pm - 2:30pm
Via Zoom
While screaming into the void can be therapeutic, it’s demoralizing when you feel that way about your website.

Those of us who work at nonprofits spend a lot of our time writing. But many of the techniques we use for writing grant proposals or funder reports don’t translate to writing for the web.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the best ways to write for how people actually read on the web.

Participants will learn and apply best practices for:

  • Replacing jargon-laden text with plain language

  • Writing for linguistically diverse audiences

  • Ensuring content is accessible to visitors using screen readers and other assistive technologies

  • Structuring content for search engines and AI tools

Who should participate:

This workshop is for nonprofit professionals who write copy for their organization’s website and other online channels, such as event pages and social media posts.

Facilitator: Clayton Dewey

Clayton has been working in nonprofit technology and web development since 2011. He applies his background in linguistics and sociology to ensure websites meet users’ needs. Aside from content strategy and user experience design, Clayton also enjoys being a goofy dad and always appreciates a good paraprosdokian.
