Job Description

Roundabout Theatre Company, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit theatres, seeks dynamic professional theatre artists to join a vibrant roster of collaborative teaching artists.


We are specifically in need of teaching artists with expertise in scenic design/carpentry or lighting design/electrics.

What you may do 

Roundabout Theatre Company Teaching Artists develop curriculum and facilitate sessions for various populations including students in grades 6–12, educators, families, audiences, and other groups. Work is primarily distributed through in-school residencies, on-site workshops, community spaces, and audience engagement events. Programming occurs across NYC's 5 boroughs. Roundabout Teaching Artists sometimes teach their craft, but more frequently use their craft as a vehicle to teach leadership skills, develop social emotional competencies, build community, or connect to the content of another academic subject.


What you bring to the role

  • Professional skills, training or experience in one or more technical theatrical disciplines
  • Willingness to travel to the outer boroughs, including Staten Island
  • Experience or interest in teaching diverse populations
  • A commitment to upholding Roundabout's core values
  • Availability for assignments September 2026 through August 2027 
  • A commitment to paid training sessions (see dates below)
  • Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend hours

It’s a plus if you have 

  • Prior teaching or teaching artist experience 
  • Experience working in public schools
  • Experience co-facilitating with other teaching artists and/or classroom teachers 
  • Ability to teach in languages other than English
  • Experience collaborating with people with disabilities 

What you should know

  • Teaching Artists are hired as part time employees. Starting hourly rate is $50 per hour for all planning/facilitation and $35 per hour for all required training and administrative tasks. This typically looks like 1 hour of paid lesson planning for each hour of facilitation. Upon completion of required training benchmarks, Teaching Artists can be promoted from the Training rank and earn from $53.06-$63.65 per hour as a Standard Teaching Artist and from $63.66-$78.34 per hour as an Expert Teaching Artist for all planning/facilitation.
  • This position reports to the Education Manager, Teaching Artists. 
  • Scheduling of work is flexible and is based on departmental needs.
  • Teaching Artists are credited on curricular materials, in Playbills and on our website.
  • Teaching Artists accrue safe and sick leave at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 56 hours of safe and sick leave each Calendar Year.
  • Occasional professional development opportunities outside Roundabout are offered. Roundabout sponsors registration and pays $35 per hour for attendance on a case-by-case basis.
  • Theatre-related benefits include periodic complimentary and discount tickets.
  • Formal performance reviews are conducted annually and include feedback from multiple staff members.
  • Roundabout retains legal ownership of the product of employee work. No work product created while employed by the Company can be claimed, construed, or presented as property of the individual, even after employment by the Company has been terminated or the relevant project completed.
  • Roundabout supplies all materials and/or equipment required for assignments.

Applications should be submitted by 10pm on May 31, 2026. Applicants chosen for consideration will be invited to an interview. If selected, interviews will be followed by a group audition where each applicant presents a teaching sample. Interviews will be held over Zoom, and auditions will be held in-person in midtown Manhattan.
