Attorney Volunteer Opportunities

REPRESENT A SAFE PASSAGE PROJECT CLIENT PRO BONO
This volunteer opportunity consists of representing a Safe Passage Project client on a pro bono basis in their immigration proceedings. This will involve the pro bono attorney entering their appearance as the attorney of record on a young person’s behalf with the Immigration Court, New York State family court, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as needed for their immigration case. Safe Passage Project will provide a mentor attorney to advise the pro bono volunteer throughout the duration of the case on relevant law, practices, and procedures. The Safe Passage Project mentor attorney will also provide relevant sample applications and briefing, and review all documents before filing. LEGAL RESEARCH/WRITING PROJECTS & CASE SUPPORT PROJECTS Legal Research/Writing Project: Safe Passage Project occasionally has need of volunteer attorneys, law graduates, or law students interested in working on legal research and writing projects to address novel or widespread legal issues facing our clientele. Such projects could include drafting legal memos analyzing complex legal questions, drafting template motions or briefs, or contributing to our case digest resources.
Case Support Project: Safe Passage Project occasionally has need of volunteer attorneys, law graduates, or law students interested in supporting Safe Passage Project staff attorneys in their case preparation for certain in-house clients’ individual cases. Such support might include assisting a Safe Passage Project attorney in drafting or researching memoranda of law, researching and compiling country conditions, or assisting in preparing a client to give testimony. In these instances, the volunteer would not enter their appearance on the client's behalf, but would provide crucial support to the Safe Passage Project staff attorney of record.

To represent a Safe Passage Project client pro bono, you must be barred and eligible to practice law in the state of New York. If you are barred in New York, please go back to the first page and select “New York” for your Bar State. If you are not barred in New York, please uncheck the “Represent a Client Pro Bono” option to proceed.
