Help Us Understand HOA Special Assessments
We’d be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete this short survey about your experience with your Homeowners Association (HOA). We especially want to hear from homeowners who have received, or expect to receive, a Special Assessment.
What is a Special Assessment?
A Special Assessment is an extra charge, separate from your regular HOA dues, that an HOA bills homeowners to cover a large expense its regular budget and reserves can’t pay for. Common reasons include:
- Major repairs, such as a new roof, siding, paving, or elevator replacement
- Damage from a fire, flood, or earthquake, especially when insurance doesn’t cover the full cost
- Legal costs or settlements
- New legal or code requirements, such as seismic retrofits or balcony inspections
- Underfunded reserves, when the HOA hasn’t saved enough over time
These charges are often large and unexpected, and they can make it harder for homeowners to afford to stay in their homes.
Why we’re asking
As an affordable housing nonprofit, Hello Housing is exploring ways to help homeowners manage these costs, including a possible affordable loan program. Your answers will help us understand what homeowners are facing and what kind of support would be most useful.
Your responses will be kept confidential.
Thank you for your time,
The Hello Housing Team
