AMSI is pleased to partner with MATRIX and the University of Newcastle to host AMSI-MATRIX Winter School 2025 on Mathematics for Action: Supporting Decision Making for a Better Future from 1-12 September at MATRIX House, Creswick (Victoria, Australia) and online.

It is expected that participants will have sufficient basic background in statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, optimisation and coding to be able to successfully participate in all aspects of the Winter School. As higher degree students in the mathematical sciences, it is likely you will have all the necessary background from your undergraduate studies. Applicants should address their level of knowledge and preparedness in the application.
  • Acceptance into AMSI-MATRIX Winter School 2025 is at the discretion of the Event Director.
  • Applicants will be notified via email (to the address provided on this form) the outcome of their application
  • All participants are expected to give a brief 'Participant Talk' on your research interests and/or PhD thesis topic relevant
  • All attendees are expected to attend all program classes for the duration of the two week Winter School
  • Application for AMSI-MATRIX Winter School includes submission of this Form AND Fee Payment via the AMSI Eventbrite payment gateway (which you will be directed to when you submit this form).

AMSI and International Student Travel Grants
Travel Grants are available to students, offering: 
  • Accommodation in Creswick for the duration of the school; and/or 
  • Assistance with the cost of travel from your home city to Melbourne. 
Students enrolled at AMSI Member Universities and students attending universities outside of Australia are eligible to apply. 

Grants for internationally based students are provided through MATRIX and Simonds Foundation support. Priority will be given to applicants from the Asia-Pacific region.

Grants do not cover Winter School application fees. All travel grant recipients must participate in person.

Female, First Nations and regional, rural and remote students are encouraged to apply.

There is a limited amount of grant funding available. It is expected that you research financial support options available through your home university and ask your supervisor/course coordinator for support to attend Winter School BEFORE making an application for a student Travel Grant.

Travel
Courtesy of MATRIX, complimentary shuttle buses will be available to attendees on the following dates and locations:
  • Sunday 31 August - Ballarat Train Station to Creswick
  • Friday 12 September - Creswick direct to Melbourne Tullamarine Airport

Accommodation
Successful applicants will receive 12 nights accommodation in Creswick, close to the program venue. This accommodation will be booked and paid for directly by AMSI.

NOTE: Grant recipients are required to participate in person for the full duration of the program.


Funding is available for delegate economy travel from their home city to Melbourne, and/or accommodation. Funding will not be granted for Ubers/Taxis or public transport.
Participant Talks
As part of the  program, all participants are expected to give a brief 10-15 minute Participant Talk on your research interests and/or PhD thesis topic. (note: presentation lengths and timings will be confirmed closer to the event).
