IIMF Luther & Willie Glanton Civil Rights Scholarship 2020

Luther and Willie Glanton were Iowa Civil Rights Pioneers.  Luther Glanton was from Murfreesboro, TN, a small town outside of Nashville, TN.  Willie Glanton was from Hot Springs, AR, which is a small town outside of Little Rock, AR.  Both grew up in the 1930's and 40's.  They met while Willie was receiving her Bachelors degree from Tennessee State University.  After dating, they married and moved to Des Moines, Iowa.  They each had aspirations and were determined to fulfill their dreams.  Luther was the second African American to graduate from Drake University Law School while Willie was the second African American woman admitted to the Iowa Bar.  Luther went on to become the First African American Judge in the state of Iowa.  Willie was the first woman Polk County Prosecutor and went on to become the First Black Legislator for the state of Iowa.  Throughout their lives they were commended on their fight for Civil Rights from a number of administrations including the Kennedy and Obama Administrations.
