After School Programs

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with CAN's After School Programs. Volunteer recruitment for the semester has ended. Please check back in December when we begin recruiting for winter semester.

After School Program Volunteer (Opportunity 1 of 2)

Make a difference by being a positive role model for students in grades K-12 during CAN's After School Program.


CAN operates After School Programs at six community centers across Washtenaw County, each serving a unique neighborhood. To learn more about each site and the communities we serve, visit our website and select Locations from the navigation menu.


Volunteers build supportive relationships with children, assist with educational activities, provide homework support, and encourage social-emotional growth. Training and ongoing support are provided.


Commitment:

  • Volunteer 2-3 hours each week on a consistent schedule for one semester or longer.
  • Programs run Monday-Thursday during the Fall and Winter semesters, typically between 3:30-6:00 p.m. (times vary by site).

Beyond the Books Program Volunteer (Opportunity 2 of 2)

Help make reading fun for children in grades K-5 by supporting our Beyond the Books program during the After School Program.


Volunteers read with small groups of children, help facilitate engaging literacy activities, and encourage a love of reading. Training and ongoing support are provided.


Commitment:

  • Volunteer at least 1 hour each week on a consistent schedule.
  • Beyond the Books takes place Monday-Thursday, typically between 4:30-5:30 p.m. during the Fall and Winter semesters. Times may vary slightly by site.

Summer Camp Program Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with CAN's Summer Camp Program. Volunteer recruitment for the summer has ended. Please check back in May when we begin recruiting for the Summer Camp Program.

Support children in grades 1-6 during CAN's six-week educational Summer Camp by helping create a fun, safe, and engaging environment.


Volunteers assist with activities, build positive relationships with campers, support staff, and help ensure children have a meaningful summer experience. Training and ongoing support are provided.


Commitment:

  • Volunteer at least 2-3 hours each week on a consistent schedule during the six-week summer program.
  • Summer Camp operates Monday-Thursday, typically between late June and early August. Volunteer times vary by site (typically between the hours of 9:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Food Distribution Volunteer

Help support food security by assisting with our community food distributions.


Volunteers unload food deliveries, sort and organize food, pack grocery bags, and help distribute food to community members. Training and ongoing support are provided.


Commitment:

  • Volunteer on a consistent schedule for at least 3 months. Some flexibility may be available depending on current volunteer needs.

Working on General Community Projects

Support CAN through a variety of one-time or occasional service projects that help strengthen our community.


Volunteers may assist with community clean-ups, food and supply drives, event support, gardening, deep cleaning, school supply collections, and facility improvement projects. 


Opportunities vary based on current organizational needs.


Commitment:

  • Join our interest list to be contacted when volunteer opportunities become available.
  • Opportunities are offered on an as-needed basis and vary in schedule and time commitment.
